Beatles, surf, rockabilly music coming June 27

Time to break out the deuce coupe with four on the floor, leather jacket and saddle shoes as Fredericksburg’s Pioneer Museum relives the days of early rock and roll at the next Roots Music Concert, Saturday, June 27, 2009. Gates open at 5 p.m., with the music nonstop from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m.

This show is all about 1950s and 60s rock and roll. The group 3 Balls Of Fire opens the evening with surfing music, followed by Sean Young playing rockabilly. Beatles tribute band The Eggmen finish the evening with the sounds of the British invasion.

Beatles fans of every generation will not want to miss the area’s first performance by The Eggmen - Austin’s top Beatles tribute band. During the first set, the Eggman present early classic Beatles songs, including Hard Day’s Night and She Loves You. The Eggman follow with a British Invasion set that includes top hits from all the fave British bands. The five-piece group prides itself on capturing all the Beatlesque details, from the “Liverpudlian” accents and harmonies to playing the authentic musical instruments (vintage Rickenbacker/Gretsch/Epiphone/Hofner/Ludwig).

For 3 Balls Of Fire, that Burnin’ Surfin’ sound never died. Burnin' Mike Vernon - a guitarist trained in jazz, Spanish, blues, rock, and western styles - formed 3 Balls of Fire in 1987 in Austin. Their sound evokes the endless summer of the Ventures, Link Wray, and the Beach Boys. The Balls have released three CDs since 2002, with all landing in several top ten of the year lists. The group performs nationally, including opening for surf guitar legend Dick Dale.

Sean Young keeps real Rockabilly/early Sun Records alive and takes it to new places with songs of brash bebop from the days of ’59 Chevys and DAs. His fans enjoy the beat, the rhythm, and soul of a genre that celebrates cars, girls, and living like you mean it. His set includes songs such as Rocket In My Pocket, One-Two-Three Carburetors, She's Got What I Want, and Wiggle Walk.

The Pioneer Museum is located at 325 West Main Street in Fredericksburg, with concert entrance on Milam Street. Admission is $12 ($10 with printout from web site - pioneermuseum.com). Students high school age and younger are free. Parking is free.

Vickie Bonewitz of My Own Chef Catering will serve an $8 platter of pulled pork sandwiches, cheese tater tots, and fried okra, with banana pudding for $2. Beer, wine, and soft drinks will also be for sale.

Roots Music is a series of live, open-air eclectic concerts on the grounds of the Pioneer Museum on Main Street in Fredericksburg, Texas. Concerts feature both emerging and established artists in an informal, family setting. The 2009 series continues on July 25 - Blues/R&B; August 29 - Western Swing; and September 26 - Cajun/Zydeco.
