Living History Island Assault - 6/30-31

The National Museum of the Pacific War’s Pacific Combat Zone comes alive as re-enactors in authentic World War II uniforms discuss strategies involved during the Pacific theater and provide tours of a recreated battlefield. See U.S. and Japanese training and tactics demonstrated as well as a flame thrower, 50-caliber machine gun, Japanese light machine gun and various armored vehicles. Finally, witness an attack on a Japanese pillbox. Hours are 10:30 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Free with regular museum admission of $6 for adults, $4 for children and free for children under six; Pacific Combat-only tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students, children under 5 are free. 500 East Austin Street. www.nimitz-museum.org.

Roots Concert Series: Swing Night - 6/23

Three different swing groups will set up on the grounds of the Pioneer Museum in Fredericksburg for Swing Band Night at the next Roots Music Series in the Texas Hill Country on Saturday, June 23.

Bands featured include:

6:30-7:25 Lucky Strikes
Founded and fronted by singer/songwriter/guitarist Crag Marshall, The Lucky Strikes perform a mix of originals that sound like standards and standards that sound fresh. Swinging with horns, rhythm section, and smoky vocals, The Lucky Strikes recreate that Big Swing sound for a whole new generation.

7:40-8:50 The Bordertown Bootleggers
The Bordertown Bootleggers are a hard swinging dance band with roots in Western Swing, Classic Country, and Jazz. The band plays classics by Bob Wills, Les Paul and Mary Ford, Ernest Tubb, Hank Williams, Spade Cooley, and The Texas Troubadours. Members have included such legends as Floyd Domino on piano and Cindy Cashdollar on steel and dobro.

9:10-10:30 The Nash Hernandez Orchestra
The Nash Hernandez Orchestra is Austin's longest running big band. The band was established in 1949 by Nash Hernandez, who began his career playing trumpet in German polka bands in Fredericksburg. The orchestra continues today under the direction of his youngest son, drummer Ruben Hernandez. The group plays a wide repertoire, from Glenn Miller to country, to some good old polkas.

Gates open at 5 p.m. and the music begins at 6:30. While waiting for the music to start, guests can enjoy a $10 meal with choice of grilled-to-order ribeye, chicken breast, or pork chop, with sides and dessert.

Guests can purchase a meal and refreshments of wine, beer, sodas, and water. Parking is free, and guests are encouraged to bring a folding chair. The Pioneer Museum is located at 325 West Main Street in Fredericksburg, with event entrance on Milam Street. All museum buildings will remain open until 7 p.m. for Roots guests.

Admission is $12. Students high school age and younger are free. A $2 discount is available for advance online ticket sales or web page printout at www.pioneermuseum.net.

Net proceeds support the mission of the Gillespie County Historical Society.

Garrison Brothers Bourbon Dinner - 6/21

Garrison Brothers Distillery is the first and oldest legal whiskey distillery in Texas. On Thursday, June 21st you can meet with Dan Garrison, proprietor, while sipping fine straight bourbon whiskey and enjoying a four course meal prepared especially for the occasion by Asa Thornton, Executive Chef at the Fredericksburg Herb Farm, 405 Whitney Street.  

A meet and greet with Dan Garrison is scheduled for 5PM – 7PM in the Bistro Bar at the Herb Farm; specialty bourbon cocktails will be featured during the evening.  Dinner will be served at 7PM for $89/person (plus tax and gratuity); seating is limited and reservations are required. The price of dinner includes one specialty Garrison Brothers Bourbon cocktail and straight bourbon nosing/tasting after dinner. Texas Walk Fest - 6/16
