Drama Production: Star-crossed in Texas - 9/22-24

“Star-Crossed”, put on by the Hill Country Children's Theater, is a show for the whole family and is a loose adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet”, set in an Old West, Texas town. The play follows the budding romance of two characters caught between their families and the law. The outcome is anything but predictable, and is filled with action and drama, sprinkled with country humor.

Show times are at 7:30PM Fridays and Saturdays, and at 3:30PM on Sundays. Tickets for “Star-Crossed in Texas” are $5 in advance and $7 at the door. The Stagecoach Theater (2254 S. Roots Music in the Texas Hill Country -9/23

Presented by the Gillespie County Historical Society, Roots Music in the Texas Hill Country is a concert series now in its 4th season that presents concerts focusing on America's main genres of music.

Here are the different music genres to be presented in the 2006 Concert Series:

08/19/2006 - Swing & Jazz
09/23/2006 - "Best of the Season"

Gates open at 5PM; music gets started at 6PM and running 'til 10PM. Tickets are $10. Children 11 & under are free. A $2.00 discount coupon may be printed simply by printing this page & bringing the page with you to the concert.

Please bring your own lawn chairs. Food & beverages will be available for purchase. No coolers are allowed on the grounds. Beverages may not be removed from the premise. Pets are welcome on a leash.

Nimitz Fall Symposium - Desperate Days: The Challenge Develops

Sponsored by The Admiral Nimitz Foundation, The Texas Historical Commission, St. Edward's University (Austin), FISD, the U.S. Naval Institute (Annapolis, MD), Texas Tech University, and the Exxon Mobil Volunteer Involvement Program, The Admiral Nimitz Foundation & The National Museum of the Pacific War invite you to their fall symposium, Desperate Days: The Challenge Develops. The symposium will focus on the first six months of the Pacific War during which the United States and its allies suffered a series of devastating defeats, which in turn ultimately led to the setting of the stage for the Battle of Midway, a turning point for the war in the Pacific.

Historians, scholars, and veterans will present different perspectives on a variety of topics. The following speakers are scheduled to speak at the symposium, although there may be last minute changes to this schedule.

DAY ONE
• Japan's Forces & Objectives - Allied Forces in the Pacific: Don Goldstein, author of numerous books on Pearl Harbor and editor of translation of Ugaki's diary.
• Pearl Harbor, Guam, Wake Island: Albert A. Nofi, author & historian AND BGen Vicente Blaz, teenager on Guam in WWII.
• American, British, Dutch, & Australian Naval Actions: James Hornfischer, author & historian AND Art Nicholson, author of a book about the sinking of HMS Repulse and Prince of Wales.

DAY TWO
• Allied Territorial Losses - Hong Kong, Malaya, Singapore, Burma, & the Dutch East Indies: BGen J. Hagen, USMC, author & historian AND Inez Jongenburger, Dutch civilian on Java, POW AND Preston Holcomb, USN, served aboard the USS Tulsa, 1 of the last 3 surviving ships of the Asiatic Fleet.
• Fall of the Philippines - Bataan, Corregidor, MacArthur's Exodus: Richard B. Frank, author of book on downfall of the Imperial Japanese Empire AND Richard Meixel, author of book on the Philippines.
• Roundtable - New Guinea and Battle of Coral Sea: Historians Frank, Goldstein, Hagen, Hornfischer, Meixsel, and Nicholson.
Veterans are being contacted and will relate their experiences on these topics. Paul Stillwell - historian, author and founding editor of Naval History magazine, will be the Moderator.

Registration Information: The symposium is open to the public and runs from 9AM - 5PM both days. The cost is $40 per person for members of the Admiral Nimitz Foundation and $50 for non-members. Students with ID's are admitted free. Box lunches are available for an additional $9 per day. Dinner with the panelists is available Saturday evening for $40/per person. Third Annual BGCA Invitational Shopping Tournament - 9/16

The Boys and Girls Club of the Texas Hill Country is hosting the Third Annual BGCA Invitational Shopping Tournament in Fredericksburg, Texas on Saturday, September 16, 2006.

Similar to a golf tournament format, each team will consist of up to 4 shoppers who will "play a round" of shopping at 18 selected Fredericksburg, Texas stores. These stores will be providing a 10% discount on ALL items purchased by Tournament Shoppers on September 16, and will give an additional donation to the Boys & Girls Club. Many stores have indicated they will place additional items on special sale for the day of the tournament at even greater dsicounts. ALL SALES WILL BE FINAL. What a perfect time to start (and complete?) that holiday shopping!

National Museum of the Pacific War Booksigning - 9/4


Author John Wukovits will be in the George Bush Gallery Lobby/Conference Room of the National Museum of the Pacific War for his new publication’s booksigning, One Square Mile of Hell: The Battle for Tarawa. The event is free and open to the public, and begins at 11AM. Books will be available for sale.



One Square Mile of Hell: The Battle for Tarawa is drawn from new sources, including participants' letters and diaries and exclusive first hand interviews with the battle's survivors. It is a riveting true account of a fight between two determined foes, neither of whom would ever look at the other in the same way again.

Cotton Ginning: A 1900's Crop - 9/2 LBJ State Park

Demonstrations and presentations on cotton ginning will be featured at the LBJ State Park & Historic Site in Stonewall this Saturday from 9AM - 3PM.

A display of items currently made from cotton and its by-products will be on display at the main buildings of the parks, and at the Sauer-Beckmann Living History Farm, participants can see cotton growing and watch a hand-turned cotton gin ginning cotton grown at the farm. There will also be hands-on activities for children.

The Sauer-Beckmann living history farm is located east of the visitor center and off the nature trial, all within LBJ State Park & Historic Site. 2 miles east of Stonewall and 14 miles west of Johnson City on US Highway 290 toward Fredericksburg, the park is adjacent to both Ranch Road 1 and US Highway 290; enter on Park Road 52 off of US Highway 290.
