Book Signing at Admiral Nimitz Museum - April 6

On Saturday, April 6th at 1:30 pm in the historic ballroom of the Admiral Nimitz Museum, the author of For Crew and Country: The Inspirational True Story of Bravery and Sacrifice Aboard the USS Samuel B. Roberts, John Wukovits along with veterans who served onboard the USS Samuel B. Roberts, DE-413 will be present to talk about his book and the experiences of the veterans that were part of the crew.

For Crew and Country tells of the most dramatic naval battle of the Pacific War and the incredible sacrifice of the USS Samuel B. Roberts, DE-413. At 1:30 pm author John Wukovits will talk about what inspired him to write this story and the input he has had from the crew and their family members. Following John Wukovits guest will hear first from those who were at the Surigao Straits, and their courageous David and Goliath battle with the Japanese fleet.

The program will end with a Q and A session with those in attendance. For Crew and Country books will be available for purchase at the program with an opportunity to have them autographed by the author and those who lived the story.

Book Signing at Pioneer Museum - 1/28

Randy Rupley, local author and translator, will be signing his recently published book which is a translation of the novel by Friedrich Armand Strubberg, Fredericksburg (Fredericksburg: The Colony of the German Noblemen's Society in Texas) on Saturday, January 28, 2012 from 10:00 A. M. until noon at the Pioneer Museum. Mr. Rupley is actively involved in translating German manuscripts into the English language.

You are invited to share a different perspective on the history of Fredericksburg in the 1850’s. Friedrich Armand Strubberg who was also known as Dr. Schubert first published the book written in German in 1867. Most of the stories concerning the adventurous life of this character are based on the sensational stories he wrote himself. They contain important eyewitness accounts of events as well as personal observations and his opinions. He may not be remembered as a great colonizer, but he certainly deserves to be remembered as a great novelist who wrote about the early activities in the Texas Hill Country.

His book is available for purchase at the Pioneer Museum Gift Shop at 325 W. Main Street.

The National Museum of the Pacific War at 328 West Main will be host a book-signing by World War II historian, James Hornfischer, on Saturday, February 12. Hornfischer will be available starting at 2 p.m. in the George H.W. Bush Gallery to sign copies of his latest book, Neptune's Inferno: The U.S. Navy at Guadalcanal.

The book tells the story of the bloody, four-month campaign to secure convoy routes between the United States, New Zealand and Australia. The campaign is believed to have been a turning point that allowed the Allies to take the offensive in the Pacific theater and eventually led to the surrender of Japan.

Hornfischer, a graduate of Colgate University and the University of Texas School of Law, is the author of two other books about World War II naval history: Ship of Ghosts: The Story of the USS Houston, FDR's Legendary Lost Cruiser, and the Epic Saga of her Survivors, which won the United States Maritime Literature Award in 2007, and The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors: The Extraordinary World War II Story of the U.S. Navy's Finest Hour, which won the Samuel Eliot Morison Award for Naval Literature in 2004. Hornfischer is a member of the Naval Order of the United States and the Navy League, and was appointed by Texas Governor Rick Perry as an "Admiral in the Texas Navy." Hornfischer has appeared on the History Channel and Fox News and frequently speaks to veterans' organizations, civic groups and professional naval organizations on the subject of the Pacific theater in World War II. He is the president of Hornfischer Literary management and lives in Austin with his wife and their three children.
